Isole Borromee
Palaces and gardens on the water
This is the outing to do at least once. The Borromean Islands are three jewels in the middle of Lake Maggiore: Isola Bella, with its baroque palace and terraced gardens; Isola Madre, greener and quieter, with its park; and the Isola dei Pescatori, a tiny village of houses and fishing nets.
The simplest way is to reach Stresa, on the Piedmont shore, and take the ferry from there: in a few minutes you're at Isola Bella. By car you reach Stresa on the A26 motorway, Carpugnino exit; alternatively you can go from the Lombard shore, boarding at Laveno.

Set aside a full day: between crossings, the palaces, and lunch on the water, time flies. It's the outing you remember from a stay on the lake.
