About ten minutes away there's a small lake that rivals Maggiore for one thing in particular: it's wonderful for swimming. On Lake Monate motorboats are banned, and that's why the water is among the clearest in Lombardy.
The free beach at Osmate is easy with families, with a lawn and a gentle entry into the water; around the shore you can rent pedalos and rowing boats. On hot days it's the quiet alternative to the busier shores of the big lake.
Here's the trick: for a swim, skip the Maggiore beaches and head for Monate. No motorboats means clean water — and the free beach at Osmate is the one to pick with kids.
